A Woman of Amazing Character Will-power and determination plays a major role when it comes to people accomplishing goals and performing the tasks they are given. When a person possesses these two qualities they are motivated, focused, will not give up easily, determined along with many other things. The word determination is defined as, “the act of coming to a decision or of fixing or settling a purpose. ” Will-power is, “the strength or will to carry out one’s decisions, wishes, or plans. In the short story A Worn Path by Eudora Welty, the main character Phoenix carried out the meaning of these two words throughout the whole story. She had experienced many road blocks during her journey, but she did not let them stop her from reaching the goal she had at the time. In the story, Phoenix is a very old woman who needed to go to town to get medicine for her sick grandson. She overcame obstacles that were both physical and mental throughout the course of the story.
Her courage and devotion to her grandson showed that she was willing to go the extra mile to make sure that her grandson was okay. This was not only because she cared for him, but because she loved him. Phoenix encountered many obstacles during her journey to town and one of them was getting through the thorn bush. As she was walking down the path her dress had got caught on a bush of thorns and every time she got her clothing free, another part seemed to get caught. She had knew and recognized that the bush was a hindrance to try to stop her from reaching her destination.
When she got free from the bush, she continued with her journey. The determination that Phoenix had showed that in this one situation lets one know that no matter what she will accomplish the goal that she set out for herself. It shows that nothing will stop her from doing what she needs to do and no matter how hard it gets she will continue to press on. Phoenix was the type of woman who would go the extreme for the people she love; she would even risk her own life. As her journey continued, Phoenix had to go through a barbed wire fence.
She had to be very careful at this point because one wrong move could cause her a limb such as an arm or a leg and she was not going to let that happen. She had to do many things such as creep, crawl, and stretch along with other things in order to make it through this fence. Once she made it safely through the fence she was able to continue on with her journey. From this situation in the text Phoenix seems like the type of woman who will face anything no matter how big or small the obstacle is and will not think twice about it. Once she starts a task she has to complete it.
She refuses to turn back especially if it is for her family. Family (meaning her grandson) is of high importance to her and she will not let anything stop her from getting what he needs. One main obstacle that stood out in the text was when she encountered the hunter and his dog. In this scene Phoenix was on the ground because she had fell and the hunter had showed up and helped her up. Once he had her standing on her own two feet he had began questioning her and telling her that she needs to go back home, but she ignored what he was saying.
She knew the reason for making this long, enduring trip and she was not going to turn back now. He (the hunter) even went so far as to take his gun and point it directly in her face. This did not bother her nor even scare her. She just stood still and faced him because that was all she knew how to do. After this incident he still tried to convince her to go back home but she kept on making her way to town. Phoenix was the type of woman who refused to let nothing stand in the way of what she had to do.
For most people this situation alone would have caused for many people to turn around and go back home but not her. She had the strength, determination and courage to make it through anything and that is exactly what she did. She accomplished her task which was to go to town and get what was needed for her grandson. Phoenix was an amazing woman. She proved numerous times that no obstacle could stop her from getting what she needed for her grandson. The devotion that she had toward him is what motivated her and kept her going.
She was selfless woman that did not let anything destroy her nor break her spirit. She kept persevering until she reached the goal she had set for herself. Every obstacle that she encountered showed that she possessed the courage, strength, will-power and determination to do whatever it takes for her family. Even if it meant risking her life just so he could get what he needed she was willing to do it, not only because she loved him but because he meant more than anything in the world to her.
